The Health Challenge
Waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and hepatitis E are major contributors to child and maternal mortality in West Africa.
According to UNICEF, 1,000 children under five die daily from diarrhea-related illnesses caused by unsafe water, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene.
Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable, with hepatitis E outbreaks showing 25% maternal mortality rates during pregnancy (UNICEF, 2023).
